Instead of new year resolutions, I picked up three base words to dwell through out this year as I feel resolutions are overwhelming to follow. Deep learning is one of the base words I chose for this year. Personally I am good at gaining base knowledge in multiple fields but if i sit and think that “Am I having in depth knowledge in all those fields?”, mostly the answer is NO.

Recently I came across a word T model learning”, the horizontal bar in T shape represents one’s knowledge in diverse field a.k.a Generalist and vertical bar represents expertise in particular field a.k.a Specialist.

After knowing this learning model, I realised that it’s not necessary to have in depth knowledge in all the fields we encounter but one should develop depth knowledge in their area of interest/passion.Having depth knowledge is always a super power.

The word “ in depth learning” always make me to remember a senior subject matter expertise in our engineering division. Whenever we face any technical problems in our design, we schedule a meeting with him. Interesting thing about the discussion with him is, he never give us solution directly, instead he ask us n number of questions related to the problem stated. At the end of the discussion he make us to spelt the answer or he leave us with the clarity to approach the problem. I always see such problem solving quality emerges only with the art of deep learning.

Having depth knowledge in our area of interest not only make us to shine in that particular field but also give us self confidence to handle other parts of our life too. It’s time for me sit and define my area of interest and to horn my skills in it through deep learning. Always remember, being a generalist helps us to collaborate with a specialist and being a specialist helps us to shine in our area of interest.
